How many generations back does the ancestry section go? How was the database used to estimate it constructed?

Updated on

The ancestry test from tellmeGen does not analyze the lineage of previous generations nor does it allow for an estimation of when a specific part of your ancestry was integrated into your family tree. Current origin analyses are based on the comparison of segments of your DNA with reference populations, which represent various countries and ethnicities. These reference populations are composed of individuals whose DNA is linked to those regions over the last three generations of their family tree, reflecting the contemporary genetic composition of those populations.

For example, if you obtain a percentage linked to Italy, this indicates that your genetic composition shares similarities with the genetic profile of that region today, but not necessarily that your direct ancestors come from there.

Regarding the ancestry database, it is composed of modern populations, reflecting current genetic diversity. For an individual to be part of our database and be considered as belonging to a specific genetic population, they and their family must be native to that population for at least the last three generations. Furthermore, all individuals who make up our reference populations must pass a strict quality control to ensure that their data is representative. We work continuously to expand the populations included and improve the accuracy of the results.
