What is the difference between haplogroups and subhaplogroups? Are both included in the tellmeGen results?

Updated on

The paternal haplogroup is a genetic group determined by specific markers inherited through the paternal line, that is, from father to son. These genetic markers group people with common genetic ancestors and reflect the historical journey of your ancestors on your father's side. On the other hand, the maternal haplogroup is the genetic group determined by markers inherited through the maternal line, reflecting the origin and historical journey of your maternal ancestors.

Within both haplogroups (paternal and maternal), there are subhaplogroups or subclades, which are more specific subdivisions of a major haplogroup. Subhaplogroups are defined by additional genetic markers that are rarer and more specific, allowing for a more detailed classification of ancestry lines. Initial haplogroups are broader, while subtypes are smaller and more specific groups.

In the tellmeGen results, we provide information on both the global haplogroup (paternal or maternal) and its specific subtypes. This information is organized so that you can easily understand the details of your ancestry and the genetic variations within your family tree.
