What is genetic vulnerability?

Updated on

The genetic vulnerability is the probability of developing a pathology based on the presence of one or more genetic variations that increase the risk of developing the disease.

By analyzing variations in the DNA sequence, which occur at the single nucleotide level and are known as SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms), and following a multiplicative mathematical model, it is possible to estimate the risk a certain person has of suffering from a disease, taking into account the incidence of the pathology and the allelic frequencies of the variants in the population.

In summary, genetic predisposition is the increase, through inherited genes, of presenting a disease during our lifetime.
